A Journey to Freedom
My OCD Recovery Story
For years, I found myself trapped in a never-ending cycle. The obsessive thoughts that invaded
my mind took away my ability to live freely. Simple tasks became monumental challenges. I
would waste precious time and energy, unable to do things like go to the grocery store without
being overwhelmed by anxiety. Every move I made was controlled by the compulsions that
followed, rituals I felt compelled to complete in order to undo the anxiety. I didn’t recognize how
deeply this had affected me. I didn’t see the severity of it until I realized it was damaging my
career, my family life, and my happiness.
The breaking point came when I knew something had to change. The constant mental block had
consumed my life for far too long. That’s when I was referred to Dr. Phillipson, marking the start
of my recovery.
I was lucky to have a family member who had gone through the same process with Dr.
Phillipson years before. I could talk to them about what to expect, easing some of my concerns.
I had heard about the ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) process, and while I was
nervous, I knew this was the path to my healing. I had no choice but to put my trust in it and in
Dr. Phillipson.
My recovery began with setting a hierarchy of objects my brain had labeled as "contaminated"
or "unsafe." These ranged from things like my car, my nightstand, floors, my clothing, my wallet,
and keys. The idea of touching or being around these objects without performing a compulsion
was enough to make my heart race. But I knew this was the starting point. I had to face these
fears head-on.
The initial tasks were incredibly challenging. Anxiety coursed through my veins as my brain sent
signals warning me that something was wrong. But with Phillipson's guidance, I slowly began to
realize that I was going to conquer this pain. He helped me see that the anxiety wasn’t
something to fear, but something that would not alter my life path and ultimately control my
decisions.
One of the most powerful aspects of my recovery was my ability to fully trust Dr. Phillipson. He
was honest with me, and I could see that he believed in my success. I put all my faith in him and
followed through with every task he gave me. There was no hesitation—I was all in. He called
me the “balls to the wall” or “all in” type of patient, and I wore that as a badge of honor. It was
my willingness to dive into the work without reservation that truly helped me make progress.
As treatment continued, I pushed myself further. Dr. Phillipson would give me a set of tasks and
homework each week, and I began to take the extra step. Not only did I complete the assigned
tasks, but I would often go beyond what was expected. I found myself moving faster than
anticipated, and I was able to begin to live my normal life. This accelerated my recovery in ways
I hadn’t imagined.
Today, I live a life I once thought was impossible. The compulsions no longer control me. My
anxiety no longer dictates my actions. I interact with my family without the constant need to
perform rituals, and I can focus on my career goals without fear getting in the way. The pain I
once felt inside is no longer a daily burden, and I now have the tools to take control of my OCD.
The journey wasn’t easy, and there were days when I felt like I wasn’t making progress. But in
the end, trusting the process, committing fully to my recovery, and going beyond what was
asked of me allowed me to regain control of my life. My OCD doesn’t define me anymore. I’m
stronger because of the work I put in, and I’m proud of the person I’ve become.
This is my success story, and it proves that with the right support, dedication, and belief in
yourself, recovery is not only possible—it’s achievable.
